Volunteering with Museums & Galleries Edinburgh is a great way to gain new skills and experiences, learn about museum work, make new friends and provide a valuable contribution to our service.
Volunteer activity is enormously varied, reflecting the diverse skills and experience volunteers bring. Volunteering is vitally important to Museums & Galleries Edinburgh and we really value the enthusiasm and dedication of our volunteers.
There are currently over 60 volunteers engaged in a wide variety of roles across Museums & Galleries Edinburgh. Volunteer roles include collections documentation, visitor engagement, giving guided tours, helping at events, gardening, costumed historical interpretation and assisting with marketing and social media.
Volunteer Collections Assistant – Lauriston Castle
This is a fixed term role whose purpose is to assist the staff at Lauriston Castle to deliver and complete the annual spring clean of the castle rooms and their contents. This includes lifting and moving large and small objects and equipment, using cleaning equipment including vacuum cleaners, brushes and dusters, working in cold conditions and working with limited lighting due to the historic nature of the building.
The post holder will work alongside the Collections Care Officer, Curator and Castle Stewards on preventive and limited interventive conservation work including object cleaning. Training and on the job support and guidance will be provided.
