Volunteering with Museums & Galleries Edinburgh is a great way to gain new skills and experiences, learn about museum work, make new friends and provide a valuable contribution to our service.
We offer a diverse range of roles, including Collections Documentation, Visitor Research, Visitor Engagement, Delivering tours and talks to the public and groups, Community Outreach, Historical Research, Helping at events, and Costumed historical interpretation.
Collections Documentation volunteers work behind the scenes at the Museum of Childhood and Museum of Edinburgh and at our Collections Centre, assisting with important collections documentation and cataloguing tasks.
Art in the City is a volunteer project which provides an opportunity for people whose lives are affected by dementia to share a gallery visit and discuss art (and other things) in a friendly and supportive environment
Edinburgh Living History costumed volunteers interpret the collections and history of Lauriston Castle and other museum collections. They are actors, costume makers, history enthusiasts and researchers who work with us to bring history alive, for example by transporting visitors back to the Edwardian period for many events at Lauriston Castle.
If you visit the Robert Louis Stevenson rooms at the Writers' Museum you are likely to meet one of our wonderful team of truly passionate Writers Museum volunteers who love meeting visitors and talking about Stevenson, his life and his books.
Lauriston Castle Volunteer Guides provide fascinating public tours of the building every Saturday and Sunday.
Visitor Engagement volunteers provided friendly and knowledgeable engagement with visitors to the acclaimed Edinburgh Alphabet exhibition at the City Art Centre between May and October 2017.
Visitor Research volunteers carried out a visitor research project throughout the duration of the Edinburgh Alphabet exhibition.
